It was important for me to find a sunscreen that was “safe” for my skin without making me look ashy. I was somewhat concerned about this product because it does contain Avobenzone. Avobenzone is one of the chemicals found in sunscreen known to be systemically absorbed. If you’re wondering why any of this matters just last month, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that certain chemical sunscreen ingredients may be absorbed through skin at higher levels than previously thought. Most specifically oxybenzone. This of course alerted the agency (FDA) to ask the industry for more data and safety testing. Currently (2019) Avobenzone is one of the UV filters with lower toxicity concerns. The agency doesn’t have enough data. We do know that Avobenzone can cause high rates of skin allergies. I’m on alert and will reading all the data as we learn more about the medical implications to absorption of sunscreen ingredients.
