Can I just say how much I LOVE Twitter! Even though this social media network is a few years old the networking opportunities are endless! I follow a handful of celebrities and style influencers including Essence Magazine Editor-At-Large Mikki Taylor. With the release of her latest Michelle Obama-inspired book, Commander in Chic: Every Woman’s Guide to Managing Her Style Like a First Lady, she has been tweeting about her New York book signing events and speaking engagements. Before the holidays I mentioned her during her weekly #FollowUpFriday Q&A session and asked if she planned on coming to DC. I had no idea it would be so soon. Just last month I posted one of her Mikki-Isms from the book:
Please don’t ever look as if you cared too much. A perennially chic sister is always modern, chic, and effortless in her appearance.
That quote spoke to me so I knew I had to be there to hear her speak. I was inspired by the open dialogue with Mikki Taylor. Here are some of the highlights:
How would you define your personal style? Classic with a twist. She has learned how to stay in her lane. She is not afraid to wear something twice like First Lady Michelle Obama. She believes in quality over quantity and she does quality in multiples.
Who are some of your favorite designers? She doesn’t have a favorite designer. She wears all brands including J.Crew but she does have a favorite aesthetic.
Current beauty and skincare regimen She works out with a trainer 2-3 times per week and believes in juicing to obtain health benefits from raw nutrients. She is also careful to keep her skin clean. She never sleeps in her makeup and uses Ambi exfoliating cleanser at least once a week. She also attributes glowing skin to her spirituality.
What’s currently in her makeup bag? “Everything” she laughed…She loves makeup! Some of her favorite products in rotation are: MAC Jubilee lipstick, Clinique press powder, Dior mascara, and the list goes on and on.
Any advice to young women? Strive for individuality and consider what you want to showcase about your personal style. What is it about your style that makes you stand out? She wants our young girls to understand the value of being a lady.
She closed the discussion with a thought I cannot get out of my head: Life is not a dress rehearsal. This is it! Stop rushing to do everything and appreciate the joys of being a woman. She also posed the question: How many days have we lost worrying about tomorrow?
This Spring she will be launching a Forever Nude nail lacquer collection of 6 nude/neutral shades to compliment brown skin tones! Her manicured nails were polished with one of the lacquers appropriated titled: Commander In Chic- a grayish nude which reminded me of OPI’s popular You Don’t Know Jacques.
I can’t wait to dig into this book! It seems like a perfect guide for brown girls to discover their personal style! I am so grateful for the opportunity to meet her! She even tweeted a photo of us together after the event!

I’ve secretly admired red lipstick on some of my favorite celebs but for some reason I’ve strayed away from wearing it myself. This past weekend I was in Georgetown shooting street style when my friend mentioned she was on the hunt for the perfect red lipstick. I invited myself to tag along. First stop was Sephora where I tried on NARS Dragon Girl. After I applied it I just felt silly…I looked at my girlfriend and I said: “I am doing the MOST right now!” Her and two other friends who joined us reassured me that it looked good but I wasn’t convinced. Bold red lipstick was a big step up from my neutral glosses. I quickly removed it and bought some boring Jack Black lip balm. Instead of giving up completely we headed over to the MAC store. Since I admire June Ambrose so much I figured I’d give her signature color Ruby Woo a try. I wasn’t immediately sold but after much self convincing I purchased it.
On my way home I checked Twitter and to my surprise I see twit pics of some of my girlfriends showing off their new Ruby Woo lipstick! I told them it was so ironic because I just bought Ruby Woo as well!

I know some may think, what’s the big deal? It’s just red lipstick..NO its actually much deeper than that. Carmen at GodMenandMoney.com wrote an amazing post -Black Girls in Red Ruby Woo about self acceptance, embracing your features and not becoming a slave to your own insecurities. I realized a part of me cared about what other people would think of me if I wore red lipstick. Well not anymore!
For all the ladies, use #ImREDy on Twitter when you rock red lipstick!
I log on to Twitter to see that one of my favs-Tracee Ellis Ross will grace the September cover of Essence Magazine! She looks great and I look forward to reading her feature. As well as her new BET sitcom Reed Between the Lines set to debut in October. Ross will play Dr. Carla Reed, “a busy psychiatrist, wife, and mom struggling to balance her job, and her happy but chaotic home life with her husband, star Malcolm Jamal-Warner.
