Everything You Need To Know About Dîner en Blanc

One of the Summer’s most anticipated events Dîner en Blanc has just been announced! Returning for the fourth year, Diner En Blanc DC will be held Saturday, August 26th. The best way to describe Dîner en Blanc is a huge all white, elegant outdoor “picnic” in a public space. A tradition that originated over 30 years ago in Paris amongst friends has grown into a highly coveted must attend event across the world.

What You Can Expect

For the 2017 dinner 500 spots have been added so there will be 4,000 total guests. As a guest you are responsible for bringing the meal of your choice along with all-white table, chairs, and table setting. I promise it’s not as bad as people make it out to be. For those looking for a more ready-made option, you have the option to rent table and chairs, and order a professionally prepared picnic basket. All guests who wish to purchase alcohol can order Champagne Jacquart – the official champagne sponsor of Le Diner en Blanc-Washington – and various wines in advance from the Diner en Blanc e-store. Over the course of the evening, 4,000 guests will eat and celebrate amid live music, entertainment and dancing.

The evening is marked with Diner en Blanc traditions like the waving of a cloth napkin to signify the beginning of the dinner and the lighting of sparklers to conclude dinner and ignite the dance floor. At the end of the evening, when the trumpet sounds, guests pack up all of their belongings, pick up all their litter, and head into the night, leaving behind no sign of their elegant revelry. For out-of-town guests, or those looking to turn the evening into a staycation, Diner en Blanc has partnered with the Fairfax at Embassy Row Hotel as its hotel of choice.diner en blancHow To Get Tickets

You can’t just buy tickets. You have to be a member or invited by someone.  Tickets are issued in three phases. Here’s the breakdown:

Phase I (July 26): People who have already attended, Diner en Blanc members

Phase II (August 2): Sponsored by Phase I guests, friends of previous DEB attendees

Phase III (August 9): People off the waiting list that haven’t attended and are not sponsored by friends who have already attended.

I’ve attended for the past two years. Once as a guest and last year as media and it is truly a wonderful experience. If you’d like to share this experience sign up for the waiting list here.
