One of the best things about living in DC is when you stumble upon a new spot that you had no idea even existed. That’s exactly what happened when I randomly found out about DC’s first and only rum distillery Cotton and Reed.
If you’ve ever been to Union Market I can almost guarantee you’ve walked right past this new rum distillery and cocktail bar without even knowing. As I was leaving Union Market the chalkboard sign caught my attention. I walked across the street to check it out and was pleasantly surprised.
Cotton & Reed is the first of about 10 local distilleries in the District that’s rum only. Cotton & Reed wanted to produce rum different from the typical sugarcane rums of the Caribbean. While their rums are slightly sweet they have hardly any sugar. All three rums are available for purchase at the distillery or online.
Cocktails start at $10 and they are good and strong! But don’t count on checking out this place for happy hour because they don’t have it nor food. Which is sort of a bummer because this spot has a vibe with an eclectic mix of music. A perfect backdrop for good convos with friends over great cocktails.
With industrial chic decor, Cotton & Reed definitely falls into the “Instagrammable friendly” DC hot spot category. They’ve only been open since November 2016 so I’m sure you’ll start seeing this spot more on your timeline (if you haven’t already).
Before the Summer is over make your way to Cotton & Reed. Don’t leave without learning about the distilling process. Distillery tours are offered Wednesday Through Friday from 4pm until midnight and on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to midnight.
