Fences Red Carpet Premiere DC

My friends over at Allied Integrated Marketing invited me to cover the red carpet of a special DC screening of the highly anticipated movie Fences. Cast and film makers Denzel Washington, Jovan Adepo, Russell Hornsby, Mykelti Williamson, and Stephen McKinley Henderson were welcomed for the premiere held at the National Museum of African-American History and Culture (NMAAHC). Viola Davis who missed this screening, stars along side Denzel who directed this screenplay by August Wilson adapted from his Pulitzer Prize-winning play.

I patiently waited for over 45 minutes at the end of the carpet hoping for a chance to chat with Mr. Denzel Washington who was accompanied by his beautiful wife Pauletta.

I wish I knew the media outlet standing next to me so I could publicly call them out for committing an obvious red carpet DON’T! I guess he decided he was just going to “shoot his shot”. Of all the things to ask Denzel Washington, this journalist had the balls to ask him questions about politics! I was so appalled when I heard him asking his thoughts on President elect Trump. I know we are in DC but come on! Nobody wants to talk about that on a movie red carpet premiere.

Mr Washington was rightfully and obviously irritated.  As his publicist was pulling him away I attempted to ask my one and only burning question: This movie comes out on Christmas Day so many people will go see this film with their families. After watching Fences what do you hope that movie goers take from this film? What I want people to get from it depends upon what they bring to it. It’s not for me to decide what it is, it’s for you to watch it, enjoy it, and you decide what it is to you.

Our brief time on the carpet was cut short because the actual movie screening was about to begin. Denzel and the rest of the Fences movie cast were quickly rushed into the Oprah Winfrey Theatre to watch amongst some of the areas finest in politics and entertainment. While I wish my interview time were longer, I am incredibly thankful for such an opportunity.

What a great response from Mr. Denzel Washington!!! Also, how freaking awesome was it seeing him face to face AND asking him a question about this phenomenal movie; that I will probably end up crying. Way to go!!!
