Escape rooms are the new it thing in entertainment all across the country. This phenomenon started in Japan and migrated throughout Europe before it landed here in the states. One of DC’s most exciting escape rooms Insomnia Escape invited me out to experience this brand new form of interactive entertainment.
What’s in the Insomnia Escape Room
You and the team of your choice (up to 7 people) will be locked in a room that contains a series of logical, yet challenging puzzles. Each scenario will help you find all of the missing pieces to solve the final puzzle and escape your room in less than one hour. Since we were first timers we decided to do The Mafia Room. Our challenge was set in 1933 at a secret speakeasy. This speakeasy is the regular meeting place of the most powerful and feared Mafia family of DC, the Cottone clan. Prominent politicians at both state and federal level have been infiltrated by this dangerous group of criminals. Our group was a team of secret agents, hired by a high-rank politician to discover and retrieve documents about his connections to the Mafia.
After we got the back story of our room and the rules of the game we donned the props to fully immerse into the experience. Once inside the locked room we were eager to get started and worried if we would make it out in the allotted time. If you get stuck at any point during the game you can ask for hints or clues from the game master that’s watching the room via webcam. The actual game and clues were exciting. The Mafia room is said to be the easier room but I still found it to be challenging but not too hard. Playing in the escape room is not physical nor scary so I highly recommend it for anyone age 15 and up. The whole experience reminded me of something you see on TV or in the movies and exceeded my expectations.
We all agreed that it was refreshing change from the typical girls night out at a bar or lounge. I can’t wait to go back and play The Alchemist room. A new virtual reality room is set to open next month and I know it will be a treat.
