Insurance for your hair? No way! That’s what I thought when I heard of Olaplex. The name was completely foreign to me so I just assumed it was not made for my hair type. In case you didn’t know I’m a member of the #GalSquad– a hand-picked group of social media beauty ambassadors for Elizabeth Arden Red Door Spa and Salons. Lucky for me I get to try out new beauty products and spa services and tell you all about it. This month was about the ground breaking hair treatment Olaplex that has been dubbed the new holy grail product for color treated hair!
What is Olaplex
Olaplex is a single active ingredient invented by Dr. Eric Pressly and Dr. Craig Hawker. Olaplex is free of silicone, sulfates, phthalates, DEA, aldehydes, gluten and is never tested on animals. Olaplex reconnects broken disulfide sulfur bonds in the hair that are broken during thermal, mechanical and chemical services. The product claims to:
dramatically reduce breakage and make your color last longer
Quick hair story: I’ve been natural-meaning relaxer free since 2008 and my hair has always been thick yet manageable. Faithfully every 2 weeks I’m sitting in the salon chair for my usual blowout. Occasionally I switch it up with a top knot, half bun, or even clip-in extensions but for the most part I wear it straight. It’s easy and I’m lazy when it comes to hair. I’ve been experimenting with color for years…from dark Brown to Blonde highlights, Rihanna-esque Red, back to Black, and now brown and blonde highlights. Color treated hair can be extremely hard to maintain. When I see damage I resort to chopping off the ends into a bob and praying it grows back in a few months. This hair treatment came at the perfect time because I was starting to notice breakage along with heat damage. Since beauty editors and celebrity stylists are singing its praises I figured it was worth a shot.
Once I arrived at the salon I got a brief overview of the 3 step process and headed to the shampoo bowl. Since I already have color I opted for the stand alone treatment. In two separate steps the bond multiplier and bond perfector were applied and left in for 10 and 20 minutes. Both treatments were rinsed out then followed by the usual shampoo, conditioner, and styling.
The very first thing I noticed was how incredibly soft my hair felt. Even though I rarely wear my natural curls I was concerned how this treatment would affect my hair texture. It’s been two weeks and my texture has definitely improved. With light, blonde highlights my hair tends to look dull and dry. No longer the case. Immediately I noticed how healthy and shiny my hair looked. The next day my co-worker asked, did you get your hair lightened? Later on in the week someone asked did I re-color my highlights. A few girlfriends mentioned that my hair looked fuller and overall better than my usual blow out style. Its been two weeks and I am more than pleased with the salon treatment along with the at home follow-up treatment
At Home Treatment
Is designed to help you repair and maintain strong, healthy hair in between salon services while continuing to link bonds within the hair.
How To Use At Home
Apply a generous amount to towel-dried hair, comb through and leave on for a minimum of 10 minutes and then rinse, shampoo and condition. DO NOT LEAVE it on your hair as a conditioning treatment. However, the longer you leave it on the more effective it will be.
How Much Does It Cost
Is It Worth It
I absolutely understand the hype around this new treatment and highly recommend it to anyone with color. The results are nothing short of amazing! The results are immediate and the health of your hair is well worth the price.
