Back in December my blogger boo Krystin invited me to join her at the advanced screening of the new TV series Empire at The Park at Fourteenth. This musical drama directed by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong is all about a music empire starring Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, and Gabourey Sidibe.
DC native, Taraji P. Henson is the main reason I’ll be watching this season. She plays Cookie, the fiesty ex-wife of music mogul Lucious Lyon (Terrance Howard). She surprises her family with an early release from prison all while fighting to gain back control of her company. The series has already been compared to Dynasty and Power. Since I don’t watch either of those shows I can’t confidently say if the accusations are true or not.
As I mentioned on Twitter, the first episode features some sketchy acting but I’m very interested in how the story line will develop as the show progresses. What I do know is her character has has some shocking, one-liners that kept me engaged during the 30 minute pilot.
In addition to her quick whit, Cookie displays some serious personal style. Fashion lovers may be pleasantly surprised with the sartorial choices. Cookie is not afraid of prints or vibrant colors. Some may see it as over-the-top, eclectic, or maybe even ghetto-fabulous. Empire costume designer Rita McGhee tells Who What Wear that color can define an entire outfit. Purple is a power color that will be seen throughout the series.
I took a few style notes from Cookie’s looks. First thing I immediately noticed was her hair followed by her makeup. Cookie flaunts long, easy flowing locks and her makeup is clean and very natural. Of course she’s rocking lash extensions but not the ones that look like spiders hanging off your eye lids. Her eye brows are on fleek (as the kids would say) and her matte magenta lipstick is perfection.
Accessories absolutely matter! I simply adore this look featuring a gold vintage Chanel necklace, paired with cocktail rings, bold bracelets, and a statement clutch.
I’ve stressed the importance of nails as a wardrobe accessory since the inception of this site! Your look is not complete without the finishing touches of nail polish. Cookie shows us a simple manicure goes a long way. All of these observations are super easy style tips to improve any look. Since it’s a new year why not try incorporating these ideas?! I know I will.
