The Tanning

Last month I attended a book discussion with author and branding genius Steve Stoute at one of my favorite DC spots Busboys & Poets. The conversation moderated by Michael Eric Dyson was an extended question and answer session about his new book The Tanning of America: How the Culture of Hip-Hop Rewrote the Rules of the New Economy.

I was on CP time so the only seat left was right behind him on the stage. I spent the entire evening listening to him talk while looking at the back of his head! LOL

While sharing his experiences he dropped alot of jewels of of wisdom but the most interesting statement he mentioned that stuck with me that night was:

“Do not let the obstacles of your peers or the infrastructure of the current culture neuter your blackness.” -Steve Stoute

I walked away feeling inspired! After the discussion I purchased a copy of the book and got it signed by Mr. Stoute. Sadly I haven’t had time to pick it up yet. I’ve been slacking on my reading since finishing 3 out of the 5 books listed on my summer reading list. For the upcoming new year I really want to dedicate more time towards reading great books. I’m ready to dig into the Tanning of America. I have a feeling I will be taking plenty of notes!

Find out more about the book and the author at Tanning of America blog. For fashion related book recommendations head over to Off the 7th.
