Fashion Blogging is Not Stupid

Whoever said fashion blogging is stupid or pointless had no idea what they were talking about. According to a recent article published by Signature 9 Fashion Magazines or Fashion Bloggers: Who’s More Influential Online? fashion bloggers are edging out magazines who (often) have larger staffs and larger budgets when it comes to influencing readers online. When Signature 9 published the The 99 Most Influential Fashion & Beauty Blogs they manually reviewed over 1000 fashion and beauty blogs and assigned a score based on the content quality, popularity and buzz. (Their list included a few fashion blogs I noted last week in- Fashion and Street Style Bloggers You Should Know) Using that same ranking criteria some fashion bloggers are beating the online fashion magazines in terms of influence factor. The list of online fashion magazines ranked are mostly US editions of international magazines, but in nearly every case the US editions receive more traffic, link and social activity than their international counterparts.

In the fashion blogger vs. fashion magazine comparison here are the rankings.

Top ranking online fashion magazines

Style.com (2)

The former home of Vogue and W helped establish the Sartorialist, so perhaps it’s fitting that if included, the Sartorialist is the only blog that would rival (and top) their influence.

GQ.com

GQ.com (3)

The men’s print style bible would just barely push men’s online style bible Hypebeast into 4th place.

Glamour.com (5)

Style.com certainly has the strongest lead, but Glamour‘s put a respectable effort into building their online presence with a blogger network and dedicated online content. Looking strictly at current magazine websites, Glamour‘s is the most influential women’s style site in the US.

elle.com

Elle.com (6)

Elle is a few points away from Glamour, but the popular magazine has worked with bloggers through the Style Coalition for some time now, and brought in former Fashionista editor Brit Aboutaleb to lead editorial for their online efforts. The Elle blog is one of the few magazine blogs with enough influence to rank in the top 99 independent of the parent website.

Vogue.com (9)

Vogue got off to a late start with their website, but they recently received a Webby and Anna Wintour has been vocal about making the website a priority.

Influential blogs not in the top 10 that I think are worth noting:

Independent Fashion Bloggers (which I just joined) cultivates a community for fashion bloggers to share their experiences and create a resource so everyone can build a better blog. They posting helpful articles, host a community linking group, and serves as a platform to connect bloggers  and PR in a safe an mutually beneficial way.

Street Etiquette- a style blog that approaches personal style from an urban perspective. With sartorial influences stretching over many areas and eras of fashion, owners combine to publish a truly unique vision of fashionable menswear.

Don’t get it twisted magazines do influence people but the fact that fashion bloggers can influence just as many should not be ignored. For fashion bloggers it is refreshing to know that your opinion and voice do matter in fashion media. Personally I still read print publications but alot of my direct inspiration comes from online bloggers and publishers. The next ranking update is September 2011 which will also include the influence of international online magazines compared to bloggers. It is my hope that one day The Seventh District will appear on one of these highly respected lists.

What fashion publication are you influenced by?
